Cryonics

Cryonics

The practice of storing patients at very low (typically, liquid-nitrogen) temperature after their legal death, to preserve them in hopes that future medical technology will be able to restore them to healthy life.

Contrast with Cryogenics, the science of the production and effects of very low temperatures.

Usage:

  • Cryonic preservation begins with a wash-out of bodily fluids with cryoprotective agents, followed by a slow lowering of the body temperature, and finally storage in a liquid nitrogen container.
  • In the TV series Futurama, the main character (Fry) reaches the year 3000 through accidental storage in a cryonics chamber.
