Why Ethics Matters for WBE¶
Whole brain emulation raises foundational questions that no other technology faces so directly: What constitutes personal identity? Does a functional emulation have moral status? Who bears responsibility for an emulated mind's wellbeing? These are not hypothetical edge cases; they are questions that must be answered before, not after, the technology matures.
The Ethics Framework is developed collaboratively with our Consciousness & Subjective Experience journal club and draws on expertise from philosophy of mind, bioethics, law, and neuroscience.

Personal Identity & Continuity
What makes a person the same person over time, and does an emulation preserve that continuity? The framework addresses theories of psychological continuity, substrate independence, and the conditions under which an emulation could be considered the same individual.

Moral Status
If an emulation is functionally equivalent to a biological brain, does it have interests deserving moral consideration? The framework examines criteria for moral patienthood and how they apply to substrate-independent minds.

Access & Global Justice
Advanced neurotechnology must not become an instrument of inequality. The framework addresses fair access, governance structures, and the responsibility to ensure WBE benefits humanity broadly rather than a privileged few.

Safety & Oversight
Responsible development requires anticipating failure modes and establishing oversight mechanisms before they are needed. The framework outlines principles for safety review, transparency, and accountability in WBE research and deployment.
